At the request of Israel, Dassault Aviation began developing the Mirage 5, a fair-weather, ground-attack version of the Mirage III in the mid 1960's. However, an arms embargo imposed upon Israel by the French government in 1967 prevented deliveries of the 50 Mirage 5Js paid for by Israel. The Israelis responded by producing an unlicensed copy of the Mirage 5, based on a modified Dassault Mirage 5 airframe, with Israeli avionics and an Israeli-made version of the General Electric J79 turbojet engine. In 1975, the first product Kafir units were assigned to the 101st "First Fighter" Squadron, and in subsequent years several other squadrons were also equipped with the aircraft. Kafir's role as an air-superiority fighter was short lived, as IAF the begun acquiring more advanced F-16 and F-15 fighter aircrafts to performed that role in 1976. The Kafir, however, excelled in the fighter-bomber role and remained in active service for the IAF until the type was finally retired by in 1996.
